The history of the mountain is rich in legends and human achievements. In 1852, Indian surveyors made the historic discovery that it was the highest point on earth. However, the milestone that was to change history came in 1953, when New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to set foot on the summit.
Conquering Everest requires extreme fitness, specialist equipment and thorough preparation. Climbers face the challenge of the "Death Zone" - the area above 8,000 metres where oxygen is dangerously scarce. Nevertheless, conquering the summit remains the ultimate dream for mountaineering enthusiasts worldwide.
