Hoan Kiem Lake

Hoan Kiem Lake

This enchanting recreational spot is a quiet destination that offers a breath of fresh air in the heart of the city.
Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as the "Lake of the Returned Sword," is one of the most iconic and enchanting spots in Hanoi. Located in the heart of the city, it offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle, its green water reflecting the surrounding landscape and creating an idyllic atmosphere. At the centre of the lake is the small Turtle Island, home to the Turtle Pagoda (Thap Rua), a historical monument that symbolises the rich heritage of the area. On the eastern shore of the lake, the Red Bridge (Huc Bridge), painted in bright red, connects the shore to Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of Jade), located on another small island. The temple is dedicated to Tran Hung Dao, a general who fought against the Mongols. The lake has deep historical significance, with tradition stating that Emperor Le Loi received a divine sword from a golden turtle in the lake, which he used to liberate the country from the Chinese conquerors in the 15th century. Later, the turtle reappeared to return the sword to the waters of the lake, giving it its distinctive name. Apart from its historical significance, the lake is a vibrant social centre. Residents and visitors alike walk its shores daily, exercising, relaxing and enjoying its natural beauty. Particularly in the morning hours, the lake is filled with people engaging in Thai and other activities. Hoan Kiem Lake is a unique blend of natural charm, historical significance and daily life, making it an essential destination for any visitor to Hanoi.
