Perched high on a towering sandstone pillar, this ancient religious sanctuary offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. The monastery, second in size only to the Great Meteoron, is a testament to the dedication and faith of the monks who built it. Constructed in the mid-16th century, it was named after the hermit who first established a dwelling on the rock in the 14th century.

The journey to the top is a challenging one, involving a climb of 195 steps carved into the rock. However, the effort is well worth it. Upon reaching the summit, visitors are greeted by a small, peaceful courtyard, surrounded by the monastery's buildings. The main church, dedicated to All Saints, is particularly noteworthy. Its frescoes, painted in 1548 by a renowned Cretan artist, are some of the finest examples of post-Byzantine art.

Inside, the monastery houses a rich collection of religious artifacts. Among them are precious manuscripts, ornate vestments, and a wooden iconostasis intricately carved in 1682. The old refectory has been converted into a museum, displaying a fascinating array of items that provide insight into the monastic life of centuries past.

Despite its remote location, the monastery was not immune to the turbulent events of history. It was raided and looted several times, most notably during the Greek War of Independence in the 19th century. Yet, it has always managed to recover and continue its spiritual mission.

Today, the monastery continues to be a place of worship and contemplation, as well as a popular tourist destination. Its unique architecture, stunning frescoes, and historical significance make it a must-visit site for anyone interested in history, art, or spirituality. The panoramic views of the surrounding landscape are an added bonus, making a visit to this remarkable place an unforgettable experience.
